Chicago, IL, February 15, 2014- ANDREW RAFACZ opens 2014 with White Light, a two-person exhibition of new paintings & photographs by Nazafarin Lotfi & Fatima Haider. The exhibition continues through Saturday, March 29, 2014.

I opened my inbox and saw your email. I was surprised and had almost forgotten; my sense of days, time, and place is not fixed anymore. I am sitting right now and the sun is making the dust in the air visible as it floats by. I see that moving and something in it feels true to me at this moment. Thank you for writing to me, I have found that I do not feel like communicating much these days and talking with you opens me up to it.

I have been taking photographs without thinking why. Images do not feel wrong to me in accepting them as part of how I am seeing right now. I want them to be part of my work and that is new to me. I also feel open to bringing what is mine into the work. What is mine?

I do think of flatness. Perhaps it is desire that I equate with flatness; nowhere but here to be. I have been thinking of communicating and how that happens. It is a thought-not even an articulate question right now. I have been thinking of being in and on land where I can see its presence. Do not know how much of that I need right now. Many contradictory questions floating around.

Does the heat change how you feel?

Thanks for sharing your pdf. I read it a few times and looked at the images. The first few images took me around. Looking around, searching, finding, floating with the birds and then the gravity of the grave. The dome-light coming through the windows and the center. It is a wanderer. Not nostalgic. More like a distant observation of the familiar.

I wonder what that distance is? Also what does it mean to give? That becomes a question…distance and giving, how do they relate if so? Perhaps that is related to what you are asking about space between things? What does it mean to have both?

The nearness, and intimacy of touch, and the overall-ness of an impersonal view. Feels close and far at the same time in both places.

White Light is accompanied by a new publication, cataloguex, written by Sean Ward and designed by Bryce Wilner.

NAZAFARIN LOTFI (Iranian, b. 1984) lives and works in Chicago, IL. She received her BA at the University of Tehran and her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has had solo exhibitions at Brand New Gallery, Milan, Italy and Tony Wight Gallery, Chicago. Her group exhibitions include Psychosexual at ANDREW RAFACZ, Chicago and Pattern Recognition at Ana Cristea Gallery, New York, NY. This is her second exhibition with the gallery.

FATIMA HAIDER (Pakistani, b. 1984) lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan and New York, NY. She received her BFA at Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan and her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has had recent exhibitions at Southfirst, New York and Julius Caesar, Chicago. This is her first exhibition with the gallery.
